The Des Moines Parks and Rec events at the 6th St bridge are wonderful. They set up a telescope for kids (and adults) to see closeups.

I’m so bummed to miss it! I did last year, too. The date coincides with another annual event I’m involved with.

Anywhere along the Mississippi where there's a lock and dam (such as my hometown of Keokuk) is terrific for viewing. The eagles swoop down to the open water and feast on the fish that are easy to get to.

Jane, I really enjoyed this read. I don't remember seeing many eagles growing up in Iowa in the 70s and 80s or when I returned for a while in the 90s. We see many here in Fort Collins, Colorado which is always exciting.

Your paragraph on the things we lose in life as we age really struck a chord. Your writing is moving, as always!

Thank you. Yes, in Iowa in those years I bet you didn't see them. After I saw them for the first time on the Mississippi in the '90s, it was at least 12-15 years before I started seeing them regularly. They were nowhere to be found before that.

Thanks, Jane. I enjoyed this break from the news.

I married a boy from Camanche back in 1982 and have enjoyed the eagle watches and tours of the Mississippi with Clinton County Conservation. It's been a few years, but they do lots of great work.

Thanks! Next year I'm going to find a weekend - when it's not below zero - to head to the Mississippi at this time of year to check out some of the spots. I wanted to find some other Central Iowa spots this past weekend but it was too cold to hike around in the woods or at a park.

Wonderful! I didn’t see a bald eagle until I was in my 30’s. The closest I ever got to one was in Florida when out riding my bike. This gigantic beautiful bird was eating its meal in a vacant lot just a few feet away. I still can’t believe how powerful and big it was.
