That sounds so much like me! For some reason I lean toward my family's Irish roots more than the majority of German roots. Maybe it's the Irish feel, the Irish colorfulness that draws us. I would love to someday visit Ireland and find out more about my Irish family (McCarrick). But also like you I believe our Irish family has been here since the early 1800's.
I think a big part is that all the other aunts and uncles on that side of the family married Irish people, so my cousins are all way more Irish than my siblings and me, and I grew up with those cousins. It's who we spent weekends and holidays with and it's very much who they saw themselves as. For us, the German bit happens when your parents meet in Milwaukee, I guess.
