I didn’t think Wisdom in the Wind was depressing but reading it was like having a conversation with an inveterate name-dropper. It could be used as the Cliff Notes version of Philosophy 101.

I, too, thought the Minneapolis on fire was too much.

Yes! Like the irritating person who takes over a dinner table. Or just a writer in general who is trying to show off the depth of their knowledge. Mine is clearly not that deep - I haven't heard of half those philosophers.

At the risk of sounding like a name-dropper, I am familiar with them only because my Mom was one of the first women graduates of Marquette. (Became co-ed in ‘09 and only a handful had graduated when she started in ‘22)

In those days, everyone had to earn a degree in Philosophy along with their chosen degree-hers was English lit. She kept lots of philosophy books and quoted them often, usually in answer to some complaint one of the nine of us lodged. When our oldest son started re-reading many of the philosophers, he’d mention them in our phone conversations (he lives in Thailand). I’m having to scramble to keep up with him because I really don’t remember much about them anymore, save for their names, and I just don’t want to admit he knows and understands much more than I. And what I wouldn’t give to have some of Mom’s books to give him, but none of us knows what happened to them.

that kind of knowledge was once more respected and valued than it is now. Philosophy is one of those classes that sounded just awful to me in college that I now wish I'd have taken.
